Case study – Employee engagement

Nathan Munt, Chartered Financial Planner, has been working with one of our business clients to deliver workplace pension engagement to their employees.

These services aim to help employees better understand their workplace pension and the options available to them.

The case

Nathan worked with our client to provide annual pension clinics spread over four days, during which our client invited its employees to attend a 1-to-1 pension session.

During these engagement sessions, employees discussed their workplace pension, broadening their understanding of how to save for, and use, their pension in retirement. Seeing an expert annually provides employees with a great deal of comfort and, through these meetings, Nathan helps to identify any potential pitfalls, so these can be addressed before they lead to problems.

Nathan tailored conversations based on each employee’s life stage, circumstances, and requirements. During these sessions, he also addressed other financial questions not specifically related to the workplace pension. The pension clinics cover an array of important topics, such as:

  • how and why pensions are important, along with options at retirement;
  • general maintenance of their pension policy;
  • the current options chosen under their pension and what this means;
  • existing investment choice and other fund options within the pension;
  • adding and updating nominations for the purpose of death benefits; and,
  • things to consider for combining pensions in one place.

After the meetings, Nathan provided anonymous employee feedback to the employer to make them aware of any issues or concerns frequently raised amongst their workforce.

These engagement sessions are not intended to provide employees with personal advice, as we must have a deeper understanding and relationship to provide this. However, they do provide employees with the opportunity to improve their understanding and confidence with pensions, which in turn leads to greater engagement and recognition.

As an employer, our client can be satisfied they are supporting the wellbeing of their staff, at a time when recruitment and retention can be challenging. This type of engagement support is also another way to attract the best talent.

Most of our clients choose to receive our full range of workplace pension and auto-enrolment services, but we are well equipped to tailor our support for clients who do not require access to our full suite of advice services.
